Angry
Skin sticks to sheets
In this heat.
Janet sleeps fitfully;
I stare at the ceiling
Wide awake as a cup of espresso,
Angry.
Angry at the night
Angry at the heat
Angry at myself
For sweating so much.
The fan strains;
Blows hot air across the bed.
Janet rolls over, kicks at the sheets.
I watch her breathe.
Through the open window
Hot air and an argument across the street,
Angry.
They are angry at each other.
I’m angry at both of them.
I’m angry at everyone --
The oppressor and the oppressed,
The beater and the beaten.
Angry at Janet for not waking up.
Angry at myself for being so angry.
